Ukrainian Historical Archives

In 2008, UCHI began a comprehensive project to record and document the lives of Ukrainians who settled in western Pennsylvania.  Since its founding in 2002, UCHI has been approached by students, scholars, researchers, and others for assistance with studies about Ukrainian topics on many occasions.  The impetus for formally organizing the project was the work UCHI President Stephen Haluszczak completed for his book Ukrainians of Western Pennsylvania, which was published by Arcadia Press in 2009 as part of its Images of America series.

In January 2013, Michael Janakis, MLIS, began to catalog the sizeable collection of documents, photos, books, posters, memoirs, audio cassettes, videos, mementos from community events, annual reports, church anniversary books, pins, medallions, pysanky, embroidery, and many other interesting items spanning the 130+ years of Ukrainian settlement in Western Pennsylvania.

The collection consists of a permanent archive of materials maintained in UCHI facilities as well as materials donated to the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center and the Pennsylvania Room at the Carnegie Library Main Branch in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Researchers can make an appointment with UCHI President Stephen Haluszczak to view materials in the permanent collection by e-mail – uchi.us@gmail.com
